Shabana Azmi was born into a Muslim family on 18th September 1950 in Hyderabad, Hyderabad State. She attended Queen Mary School, in Mumbai. She holds bachelor’s degree in Psychology from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. After completion of her formal education she joined Film and Television Institute of India, Pune.
Her film debut was in 1974 through Ankur opposite Anant Nag, movie was a big commercial hit and Shabana earned her first National Film Award for Best Actress for her role in the film. She consecutively earned three National awards from 1983 to 1985 for Arth, Khandhar and Paar. Since her debut she appeared in more than 120 Bollywood and Bengali films. She made her television entry in 2013 through Hindi serial “24” aired on Colors channel.

She is married to celebrated scriptwriter, lyricist, poet Javed Akhtar since 9th Dec 1984. The couple has no children. Javed Akhtar was earlier married to Bollywood writer Honey Irani.
She was born to Kaifi Azmi, a poet and Shaukat Azmi, an actress. Her parents were active members of Communist Party of India.
She has a brother named Baba Azmi, a cinematographer.
Bollywood actresses Farah Naaz and Tabu are her nieces.
