Short biography
Prakash Raj was born on 26th March 1965 in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. He attended St. Joseph’s Boys’ High School and St. Joseph’s College of Commerce, both in Bangalore. After completion of his education he started to work for Kannada TV serials like Bisilu Kudure, Guddada Bhootha etc aired on Doordarshan. He worked at Kalakshetra, Bengaluru for monthly salary of INR300 a month. His movie debut was in small roles in Kannada films like Raamachari, Ranadheera, Lockup Death etc. His Tamil film debut was with Duet in 1994, alongside Prabhu, Ramesh Aravind and Meenakshi Seshadri directed by Kollywood veteran director K. Balachander. On the advice of K. Balachander Prakash Rai changed his name to Prakash Raj, but still he is known as Prakash Rai in Kannada film industry. Due to his experience in several film industry he is fluent in languages like Kannada, Tulu, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Marathi. In 2002 he ventured into film production with Tamil film Dhaya starring himself with Meena, Raghuvaran and Lakshmi. His directorial venture was with Naanu Nanna Kanasu in 2010 starring Amoolya, Ramesh Arvind, Sithara and Sihi Kahi Chandru, the film was a huge commercial success. His second movie Oggarane opposite Sneha and Urvashi in 2014 was a surprise blockbuster hit.

Prakash Raj married actress Lalitha Kumari in 1994 and the couple gave birth to two daughters named Meghana and Pooja and a son named Sidhu (son deceased). Citing irreconcilable differences they were divorced in 2009.
