She was born on 2nd June 1987, to a well known Bollywood legend Shatrughan Sinha & Poonam Sinha. Her father is an actor and politician who was a cabinet minister in the 13th Lok Sabha. At present he is active in BJP party. Her mother Poonam Sinha is an actress and former Miss Young India.

She is the youngest child. Sonakshi has twin elder brothers namely Luv Sinha & Kush Sinha. Luv Sinha is an actor and made his debut with Sadiyaan in 2010. She did her schooling at Arya Vidya Mandir in Mumbai and later attended Shreemati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey Women’s University in Mumbai. She holds a bachelors degree in Fashion Designing.

Based on her graduation she started her career as a fashion designer for film Mera Dil Leke Dekho in 2005 and later started to appear in Fashion Weeks sponsored by Lakme. She entered bollywood with her blockbuster debut Dabangg in 2010 opposite Salman Khan.
