Riya Sen was born on 24th January 1981 in Kolkata, West Bengal state. She attended Loreto House and Rani Birla Girls’ College in Kolkata. She subsequently studied fashion at National Institute of Fashion Technology and now designs her film clothes. She is an accomplished dancer and trained in Kathak and belly dancing. She is an expert in kickboxing.
She started her career as a child artist in 1991 through film Vishkanya. She gained recognition after her super hit video album Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi when she was just 18 years old. She later worked for several music videos, fashion shows and television commercials. She made her film debut through Tamil movie Taj Mahal in 1999 co-starring Manoj, Revathi, Radhika and Ranjitha. Her debut was a commercial failure but her acting skills were appreciated by the critics.
She subsequently appeared in numerous successful films like Style co-starring Sharman Joshi, Sahil Khan and Shilpi Mudgal, Anandabhadram co-starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Kavya Madhavan, Manoj K Jayan and Biju Menon, Qayamat: City Under Threat co-starring Ajay Devgan, Sunil Shetty, Sanjay Kapoor, Arbaaz Khan and Isha Koppikar, Paying Guests co-starring Vatsal Seth, Shreyas Talpade, Javed Jaffrey, Aashish Chaudhary, Celina Jaitley and Neha Dhupia,Zindagi 50-50 co-starring Veena Malik and Rajan Verma, among other films.
